3D Infrared Scanner R3Dscan

R3Dscan scanning a model car

The R3Dscan is a 3D infrared scanner that uses a completely new method of capturing surface data. Unlike conventional fringe projection systems it analyses not the reflection but the heat energy absorbed by the measurement object. This makes it possible to digitise transparent, dark and reflective surfaces precisely, entirely without spraying or applying reference markers. In the robot guided variant the scanner can be integrated directly into the production line and inspects the shape, location and position of objects within the production cycle.

The Infrared Measurement Method

Conventional fringe projection systems quickly reach their limits with transparent, mirrored or black surfaces. To achieve usable measurement results the object must be elaborately pre treated, for example by spraying with anti glare spray or applying positioning markers. However, this time consuming procedure is not suitable for fast quality control within the production cycle.

The R3Dscan takes a fundamentally different approach. The system projects a widened laser beam onto the object surface and heats it in a fringe pattern by a few tenths of a degree Kelvin. Instead of evaluating the reflection, the R3Dscan analyses the heat energy absorbed by the object and detects it using an infrared detector. Since the surface condition is irrelevant for this patented method, transparent, dark and reflective surfaces can be digitised precisely and without any pre treatment. In addition the system shows no sensitivity to ambient light or temperature fluctuations and delivers reliable measurement results under all conditions.

STEP 01

Heat

A widened laser beam heats the surface in a fringe pattern by a few tenths of a degree Kelvin.

STEP 02

Absorb

The object absorbs the heat energy, regardless of transparency, colour or reflection.

STEP 03

Capture

An infrared detector records the heat distribution and generates precise 3D data from it.

Conventional vs. R3Dscan

Conventional systems

Reflection

Conventional systems analyse the reflection of projected light. With transparent, mirrored or black surfaces they do not deliver reliable results. Elaborate pre treatment by spraying or reference markers is mandatory.

Heat energy

The R3Dscan analyses not the reflection but the heat energy absorbed by the object. Transparent, dark and reflective surfaces are captured precisely, entirely without pre treatment. The method is insensitive to ambient light and delivers reliable results under all conditions.

Areas of Application of the R3Dscan

Automotive production

The R3Dscan enables, for the first time, the inline automated measurement of transparent components such as headlights directly within the production cycle. Shape, location and position are inspected fully automatically and the result is available in 60 seconds.

Lightweight & fibre composites

For the inspection of CFRP, GFRP and other lightweight materials the R3Dscan offers an efficient solution. Geometry, fibre breaks and surface quality are captured reliably and integrated seamlessly into the production process.

Quality assurance & series production

In high volume production the R3Dscan enables 100 percent inspection within the production cycle. Without pre treatment and without interrupting the production flow.

R3Dscan with Robot Integration

R3Dscan on an orange KUKA robot arm

The R3Dscan is available in a robot guided variant and can be integrated directly into existing production lines. Components are thus inspected fully automatically within the production cycle, without interrupting the production flow. For the first time this makes it possible to measure transparent, mirrored and black surfaces inline and without any pre treatment in an automated way.

  • Direct integration into the production line
  • Fully automatic inspection within the production cycle
  • No interruption of the production flow
  • Suitable for transparent, mirrored and black surfaces
  • Measurement result in 60 seconds
  • Compatible with common robot systems such as KUKA
